The journey to understanding the world of Slime Rancher.

Whenever I feel I've gotten a grasp of how things work, the game just goes ahead to do whatever and impress the heck out of me.

Image

Everytime.

Image

Sometimes at my expense.

Image

Sometimes at its own expense.

Image

...I think.

Image

Sometimes I just don't know anymore.

Image

I just know that I appreciate every one of these moments.

I have those moments a lot. I like playing early access games, because once the game is way along into development and near completion you don't get too many moments like these c:

IT KEEPS HAPPENING

Image

Then the moment I go picking up plorts to keep the reef tidy, in the distance...

Image

Where is it going like this? Wait a...UH OH.

Image

After a moment of containing my emotions, I let them all out while resuming my plort cleaning.

Image

But the day had only just begun.

Image

10/10.

Image

I can't think of a better way to escape Tarrs. Boom Slimes sure ain't stupid.

Image

...well, at least one of them anyway.

Image

IT. KEEPS. HAPPENING.

I spent some long time watching the coop relentlessly to cleanly witness a Hen laying an egg. And while I succeeded in recording not one, but TWO eggs being laid out...

Image

...I'm still not sure if it was from the Hen at all. But I didn't get to ponder on that for long, because my batch of pink slimes that I moved next to the coop recently reacted to the matter less tactfully.

Image

You probably didn't notice, but the plort you see right there used to be a Roostro twenty seconds earlier.

Image

What I did NOT notice amidst the monstrosity of the slimes' hunger at the time is that one little slime that didn't even care to get out, he's just trying to give his buddies a helping hand.

I'm not sure if I should be terrified by that more than the creeping menace atop of it.

Image

Then I went ahead to apply what little slime science I gained up until now before the slimes applied themselves further.

Image

I think I've started to get a grip on how slimesplosions work now. It's a good light for pioneering some theoretical slime physics.

Image

And this is a good reminder that I have yet to be mad at this game. Good job, Nick.

I've never had this happen to me, oh my god. Have I not played long enough?

I honestly hope they keep some of this stuff at least, its silly and in a way, makes the slimes even better and kinda gives them a sort of 'silly/derpy' characteristic.
And the Tabby said.. "Meep!"

Playing a game and playtesting it aren't exactly the same thing. And I haven't even playtested nearly enough.

But they do not tower high enough above me and my job to ranch and apply slime science.

There's always one of them that looks at me very discriminately.

How do you get any of that to happen?

That's what I asked myself for most of these. But the explosions of slime mostly have to do with shooting them all outside your general proximity in the same general direction ideally in the sky, then approach the point where they vanished from your range of sight. The one in my third post should clue you in more.

The results should variably be stunning, to say the least.

Alright, this might get very technical for some, but bear with me here. This started with the crazy idea of trying to put things behind the second slime gate and see what would happen. Then I remembered the ceiling hole covered by an invisible wall/floor/ceiling. Things got really juicy as a result.

Image

You can see a few Pink Boom Largos I clipped through the gate earlier down there. But more importantly you can see the density of the blockade here. It's impossibly impossible for a human-sized rancher to cross this cavity here.

Image

I only started this experiment with Pogofruits. It was only a matter of time until I tried other things along with it. And by things, I mean live experiment volunteers.

Image

The important thing to notice here is that the spinning stack also reflects the thickness of the floor/ceiling.

Image

It's also important to notice how dense it is. Adding more to the stack requires pushing it down the hole...

Image

...or else it will push things right back.

Image

Most ressources' size cleanly affect how much of the stack it will take up. Chickadoos here take the least amount, making it easier to squeeze them through.

Image

Here you can see a Roostro and a Hen Hen at the bottom. A new ecosystem is being made and developing as we speak.

Image

Not to mention that the stack of spinning birds is not exempt of this. It also evolves on its own.

Image

And with that, I'll leave the rest for everyone's enjoyment.

And this is how I gave the "Under Construction" signpost in front of the Slime Gate a new meaning.

Starting off the day with a crude sight of a poorly maintained stack of food...

Image

...and an equally satisfying disposal of the former. Which means...

Image

...that it's time to resupply my stocks!

Image

This is the kind of horror a Barnacle from Half-Life would approve.

Image

I swear the tree trunks are hollow and are connected to a tunnel from the Slime Sea in order to pop these out.

Image

Said trees slightly distracted me from looking at the new landscapes in the horizon.

Image

But this strangely large formation of Pink Tabby largos down there prompted me to dramatically drop in for context-sensitive investigating.

Image

The aftermath of this spontaneous interruption also demanded further diagnosis. And apologies, because I obviously interrupted its fixation on the beet.

Image

Later that day, the lingering effects of the psychological trauma were filed as conclusive proof that the heart beet's high-pressure pulses were directly linked to the stress level of the slime in question.

Image

COME ON AND SLAM AND WELCOME TO THE JAM

Image

Further reminder that I love this game.

This is insanity!!! You are crazy!!! I cannot wait for the day when Monomi Park unlocks that gate and you can walk in and clean up your spinning chickens and the other messes you made down there.
