is this like the Terraria seasonal events? (Halloween and Xmas) is this based on the date on the computer? if you lose the event, can you change the date config and play it?

Wouldn't recommend doing this. Manually adjusting the system clock could cause problems with the backup save system and/or Steam Cloud saves :(

Doesn't stop anyone from doing it anyway; especially if they backup their saves manually.

From our research there may be a special event programmed in for January first... and you will be able to keep any of your ornaments you have gathered unless a patch is added to forcibly remove them which is unlikely

so you can keep them but you can't get them from crates anymore?

From what Kara has said it sounds like that is the intention. as for them not being Obtainable after the 31st from our digging there is something special on January first

my current goal is 200 of every non-special ornament. got pink and phosphor already, 50-ish in on tabby. hopefully i can get at least 100 of each of the rare ones by the end of the whole thing.
