So I just started playing and I went and combined the explosive slimes and the pink but any time I try to harvest plorts I get blown up and die, is there a way to harvest without going into the pen and getting blown up?

You could buy the Plort Collector upgrade for their corral. It sucks up plorts from it so that you don't have to enter the pen to get them.
