They eat other slime species, not each other, and other slimes can be easily assumed by a random kid
to be a actually different species than the Tarr, so no, no cannibalism, just the fact that the Tarr are predators

While this is true, it doesn't exactly take a psychic to tell he was joking. It is a sarcastic and satirical sense of humor, which is hard to detect nowadays unless you're as used to it as I am. You may not have detected it, but that doesn't mean he wasn't being clear. Being clear about it would have ruined the joke entirely; such is the nature of satire.
Even his response was sarcastic. He wasn't making fun of the person in a mean way, so I feel that you are slightly overreacting.
