Less Annoying Farms

Postby SnailsAttack » Sat Jun 17, 2017 6:49 pm

Maintaining farms is currently a very annoying process.

As far as I can tell, each crop lasts 3 cycles. It produces the maximum number of crops for the first 2, and then on the third one it yields only and exactly 5 crops. I'm not sure why this is, but it's incredibly annoying and doesn't make any damn sense.

Sometimes when your crops "run out" they don't disappear and make the farm available for a new crop so you can never be sure when it needs to be replanted; Thus I usually just replant after every harvest, but that's tedious and annoying.

Another problem with just trashing the old crops and planting new ones after every harvest is that they get a head start every time you do so. Why???

I think that farms should be changed so that crops last forever, because honestly the cost of one crop for each replant is basically worthless, it's just annoying. Also, replanting crops should not give them a headstart because that makes no sense.

If crops never stopped growing, then dying and having the game skip ahead 24 hours wouldn't kill and rot all your crops, which would be VERY HELPFUL.

Also, harvesting crops is kind of obnoxious, especially with trees. You have to point your vac gun almost exactly at the fruit you want to pick, and suck at it for a good second and a half. This usually has to be done about 6 times to completely pick a tree.

I think that using a vac gun in the generally direction of a tree or ground crop should pick them almost instantly, and in a larger area.

TLDR;
- Crops should last forever once planted.
- Crops should be easier to harvest.

Thanks for reading.

I agree that it would be easier if we could at least have some crops that can be harvested forever, like trees for instance and perhaps some veggies. As for quicker harvesting there's a trick I do and it works wonders, instead of aiming the vac at each fruit or whatever, it's quicker to delete the crop and by doing so it makes all of the crops fall from the tree or come out of the ground and all you gotta do is vac em up.

Yes, I mentioned this, and it's really dumb and annoying that that's the easiest way to do it.

True, but it's all we have for now.

farms definitely need to be easier.
as someone who has slimes that exclusively eat fruits and veggies, it's a pain. i have 6 prickled pear trees and 1 silver parsnip garden.its so hard to pick them all and by the time i'm done all the slimes are angry.
Look who it is, it's this guy! Golly gosh, what's up?

I always just wait for the fruit to fall off the tree...

Maybe there should be an upgrade from the garden that greatly increases the number of harvests. A bee box would make sense, since bees pollinate the plants.
It's easy to forget but you're playing an early access game -> back up your save files!

Ugh. No.

Plants don't live forever in real life. Sure, maybe fruit should last a little longer, but making farms last forever would make the game FAR too easy.

I have a different proposition: a way to pre-insert, perhaps, up to 10 of a plant to grow.

In real life, normal veggie farms don't have multiple harvests for one single plant, so maybe you had to fill the garden again every harvest. For fruits, maybe have the lifespan longer, but the first harvest takes longer (the tree has to grow to start yielding produce).

Games are supposed to not be real life.

But are more realistic if they simulate it in-game.

Here is an idea i had:
Keep the gardens as they are, but have "upgraded gardens"
To get these, you would not be able to just upgrade them right off the bat (pacing) rather after you obtain the sciencey area, you are able to buy the first upgrade blueprint for around 10 000 moneys, these would then allow you to start a project, needing large amounts of plorts (perhaps 100-200 pink plorts and 50 of some rare ones) to permanently unlock the ability to upgrade a normal garden (perhaps one all other upgrades are purchased?) for another fee.

These upgraded gardens subsequently keep crops alive for longer and more harvests, and have more features to buy such as an auto-collector, or even an auto-planter that can be configured to take crops out of what has been harvested, or maybe automatically creates a new crop each time, but will use up 5 crops each time due to the automated system. These will cost a fair bit to get, but will stop the need to constantly check on farms and suck them. Perhaps even better farms could be gotten later with similar methods, more expensive blueprints and more plorts needed.
To counteract the fact that these gardens harvest themselves as well, make the crops still rot over time. However in the first upgrade maybe add an "ice box" upgrade which cuts the rate of decomposition in half, and then later the even more upgraded farms could just store them, forgetting the risk of decomposition.

Apologies for the wall of text, but if we make these upgrades cost a lot of money, then the ease of crop collection will be made worth it, and while it will make some things easier you most likely won't have a ranch full of these things (unless you invest a LOT of time into it!) Really this is just to make the collection of a very wide variety of fruits and vegetables for late game a bit less tedious then it currently is.

I do agree with the anti-head-start thing, as it doesn't make any sense whatsoever. The rest is there to add more to the game, and make it a challenge. If there was no rotting, it would be both unrealistic and make the game way too easy. And the tree thing... Just wait until the fruit falls off. I hate to contradict your suggestion, but, I just felt like it had to be done. If you want easier crops, just plant them at about 8 A.M. and then go to sleep, in the morning there will be fresh crops.

Thank you for reading my reply.

The thing is, I don't like to replant crops. It's boring and tedious. And I didn't say that crops shouldn't rot, just that gardens should have unlimited crop cycles.

That last sentence contradicts itself, by the way.

I don't particularly like using up half the entire day to feed all my slimes with different food so they won't escape - doesn't mean that slimes should just produce plorts for nothing.

I don't particularly like depositing every one of the plorts and slime science resources for the next quarter of the day - doesn't mean that plorts and slime science resources should magically gravitate toward the refinery and plort market.

I don't particularly like falling into the slime sea after miscalculating my jetpack - doesn't mean the slime sea shouldn't exist.

See where I'm going?

The game isn't designed to be a breeze. Farming is MEANT to be tedious - and besides, lots of people don't find it tedious at all.

How about automating the farming process? Slap an auto feeder (aka: planter) and an auto colector onto the farms and there you go. The crop will replant it's self as long as there is fruit in the feeder (planter) and the collector will prevent fruit from rotting. The fruit could be auto replanted after every harvest to make it super efficient or after the normal three to make manual planting the more efficient rout.
