Chess Slimes! (Plus artwork)

Postby NobothBlue » Mon Feb 26, 2018 9:56 pm

Within the Far Far Range, even among the most exotic and strange of slimes, this species of slimes made itself known by its very peculiar behavior. Chess Slimes have two different colorations: black and white, and for some reason this feature splits the entire species in two large turfs, where they butt heads against each other every time members of a different coloration shows up. For some reason the favorite foods of these slimes are the opposite coloration’s slimes and plorts too. Not only are they cannibalistic, a trait rarely present in other slime species other than Tarrs, eating plorts of the other coloration doesn’t turn them into largos either, which adds to the already enigmatic biology of the species.

To make things more interesting, these species possess a hierarchical system as well, which was decided by the subspecies of the slimes. There are 6 different members of the subspecies, each with their own unique roles.

Chess slimes are usually found in herds, usually consisting of a largely pawn slimes and at least one slime of another subspecies. When a herd encounters another of a different coloration, war is brewing…

Many believed that the incredibly complex behavior of the whole species indicated that the chess slimes has evolved differently and rapidly compared to other species. What triggers this evolution is unknown, and most of their cause of behaviors and biology still caused observers to scratch their heads today. This species has piqued the interest of many researches over the years, and has served as one of the definite showcases of the incredibly diverse, mysterious, and perplexing ecosystem of the Far Far Range.

It is recommended that ranchers only ranch one color of chess slime, unless they want to invite trouble.

Diet: Everything!

Slimeology:

Even though they are the smallest subspecies of chess slimes, being a little smaller than an average slime, Pawn Slimes make up about half of the entire chess slime population. Pawn slimes of the same color often form herds together, which may or may not accompanied by members of another class. When in cross-turf combat, pawn slimes have difficulty moving distances with its tiny body and tend to focus largely on whatever is directly in front of them, rendering them vulnerable to long range or back attacks.

Researchers have also noted that chess pawn slimes only attack under the command of higher subspecies. This means that, in an occurrence where two herds of different colors composed entirely of pawn slimes were to meet each other, no conflict will arise. In fact, in the rare cases where researchers are lucky to observe such a phenomenon in wild, pawn slimes will play with any other slimes regardless of their appearance (With the exception of tarrs of course), and will even share their plorts with black chess slimes. The pawn slimes’ friendly trait is something that was rarely seen in other subspecies.

Rancher Risks:

Not much really! Like pink slimes, pawn slimes are very docile and love to hang around other farmers. In addition, pawn slime largos are actually small enough to be absorbed by the Vacpack. Very convenient!

However, no matter how friendly they are, they are easily mind controlled by other chess subspecies and will do their orders by and means, even if it means attacking the farmer. Their numbers can be overwhelming too if not taken care of correctly.

As legends among ranchers said it, once in a blue moon, when a pawn slime is fed enough, they might transform into slimes of other subspecies of the same color. This stupefying sounding event has never been caught on camera or proven under lab conditions, but accounts of ranchers reporting that their pawn slimes turned into other chess slimes are numerous.

Plortonomics:

As with other chess slimes, plorts of pawn slimes are rich in nutrient and can be used to make products that enhances a person’s body and mind, especially in the early stages of development. Pawn plorts in particular contain a small amount of all-around antidepressants, which can be manufactured into pills in clinics. However, due to the smaller plorts, individual pawn plorts are lesser valued…

Slimeology:

Chess Knight Slimes are known to be extremely bouncy and energetic amongst the chess slimes. They can jump to great heights and move unpredictably, and they are also mischievous nature. All this trait makes them very hard to control. One observer noticed that with each bounce, the chess knights to not land very far from their starting positions despite the impressive vertical movement.

The most common chess slime herds encountered in the wild consists of 4 to 5 pawn slimes and a knight or bishop slime. Bigger herds may contain more chess knight slimes. As with bishop slimes, knight slimes are generally friendly in nature until they see a “harmful” action done to chess slimes of the fellow color (like sucking them up with the vacpack for example). Scientists are able to observe these slimes closely, but there are reports of serious injuries when unsupervised.

Rancher Risks:

Knight Slimes have a high vertical charge, which they will do often when agitated or hungry. They can easily break a corral ceiling, so do take note of when trying to subdue them.

Plortonomics:

As with other chess slimes, plorts of chess knight slimes are rich in nutrient and can be used to make products that enhances a person’s body and mind, especially in the early stages of development. Chess knight plorts in particular also assists in the development of muscles, so they are often used in sports and medical products.

Slimeology:

Of all the chess slimes, the bishop slime’s movements are very odd. They can jump very long distances, but somehow only prefers to displace diagonally relative to where they look. Unlike their knight slime siblings, bishop slimes are usually timid and passive. Once confronted however, they become even more troublesome to deal with than the knight slimes due to their far reaching jumps.

The most common chess slime herds encountered in the wild consists of 4 to 5 pawn slimes and a knight or bishop slime. Bigger herds may contain more chess bishop slimes. As with knight slimes, bishop slimes are generally friendly in nature until they see a “harmful” action done to chess slimes of the fellow color (like sucking them up with the vacpack for example). Scientists are able to observe these slimes closely, but there are reports of serious injuries when unsupervised.

Rancher Risks:

Bishop Slimes prefer to move in a large two dimensional field, which makes them naturally agitated when confined within corrals. They will mostly refuse to eat and produce plorts when angry, and might even attack ranchers who get into the corral.

Plortonomics:

As with other chess slimes, plorts of chess bishop slimes are rich in nutrient and can be used to make products that enhances a person’s body and mind, especially in the early stages of development. Chess bishop plorts in particular also assists in maintenance of internal organs and blood circulation, so they are often used in meditative and medical products.

((Thanks for reading! I'm planning to add other slimes as well, maybe in the comments, bc i somehow cant put more than 3 attachments. Also yeah I tried to mimic the official artstyle to a bad result haha))

Rook Slimes

Slimeology:

Sometimes, in larger herds of about 6 or more pawn slimes which may contain more than one knight/bishop slime, a figure towers silently over them.

The rook slimes are the heaviest and largest of the chess slimes, so large that sucking them with the vacpack might take a while as they tend to jam the hole. By the default, rook slimes are very passive. They usually prefer to stay in place, close to and watching a herd, even when they notice an agent they deem “dangerous” such as tarrs and ranchers. They will grow more alert as these “agents” move closely. Once a certain distance is closed, regardless of whether or not one of the herd slimes are tampered with, they will turn hostile…

When hostile, rook slimes prefer to slide across the ground instead of bouncing around, probably due to their weight, and somehow only prefers moving horizontally from their point of view. They will take a few seconds to charge before ramming at a fast speed to the nearest horizontal direction to the target and wouldn’t stop until they hit a wall or a very fast distance. Due to the time it takes to charge up their rams, they are relatively slow and predictable, and can easily be avoided by moving diagonally to their perspective. However, it is still strongly advised to watch them as a chess rook slime’s ram is incredibly destructive, providing formidable damage to those who are poor enough to stand in their way. Pay extra attention when facing them.

Because chess rook slimes have no control over their ram speed, observers who do not wish to deal with them can lure them to charge off a cliff or the slime sea.

Rancher Risks:

Chess rook slimes generally are well behaved, but will occasionally go berserk when they’re upset and may agitate surrounding slimes by their rams. Observers noted that this berserk periods will increase if they are confined with slimes other than the white chess slimes (especially the black chess slimes!), if they are unfed, or have their food thrown at them. It is generally recommended to free range them.

In addition, rook slimes seem to have more “authority” to the pawn slimes than knight or bishop slimes. When a rook slime isn’t fed well, nearby pawn slimes of the same colors may become hostile as well.

Plortonomics:

As with other chess slimes, plorts of chess rook slimes are rich in nutrient and can be used to make products that enhances a person’s body and mind, especially in the early stages of development. Chess rook plorts in particular also assists in the development and maintenance of bone structure, so they are often used in health and medical products.

Slimeology:

Without a doubt, queen slimes are individually the most dangerous of all chess slime subspecies. They are aggressive and will attack any observers on sight, and move blisteringly fast. Each of the chess queen slimes’ attacks are only narrowly weaker than that of a rook slimes’, but they make up for it by the rapid frequency and unpredictability in movement. Their speed is also part of the reason why they’re very hard to catch, as they bounce everywhere with a velocity strong enough to resist the suction power of the vacpack. In wild turf wars, queen slimes will prioritize the strongest slimes of the enemy herd first esp. king slimes if there is one. Be very sure to prepare thoroughly when trying to face queen slimes, as these slimes are known to cause havoc. They will wear down their enemies very quickly.

A chess queen slime is mostly very close to a chess king slime in very larger herds usually comprising of at least 8 pawn slimes, 4 bishop or knight slimes, and 2 rook slimes. However, some observers reported sightings of lone queen slimes, without any other chess slimes of the same color in sight, tackling an enemy herd on their own. The results are mixed: the queens may emerge victorious as a one slime army, or become overwhelmed. Observers wonder of why this behavior exists, although some theorized that the queen’s inherently cocky nature may be the cause.

Rancher Risks:

Aside from being very difficult to catch, the chess queen slimes really love to go berserk. In fact, the first time they’re out of a vacpack they will go berserk non-stop until they starve. After they are fed and calmed down, chess queen slimes will still be in a bad mood for days, which might turn other chess slimes nearby to become hostile. Ranchers agree that it took a significant number of resources and time to please and tame the queen. When they trust a rancher enough though, the queen slimes will defend them even from tarrs, and help soothe other chess slimes of the same color.
The queen’s berserk periods are usually affected by how much chess slimes of the same color are around them. The more, the faster they will calm down. They also prefer free-range as opposed to corrals.

Plortonomics:

As with other chess slimes, plorts of chess queen slimes are rich in nutrient and can be used to make products that enhances a person’s body and mind, especially in the early stages of development. However, their most famous feature is the presence of mysterious molecular structures that assists intense periods of mental focus, rapid healing, and body growth. They are extremely valued as products from queen slime plorts can help in incredibly stressful and emergency situations. There are countless cases where these products saved lives that would’ve been hopeless otherwise.

King Slimes

Food: opposite color Chess Slimes and their plorts

Favorite food: king chess slimes of the other color

Slimeology:

The absolute leader of the chess slimes. King slimes are extremely rarely sighted. There is usually only one chess king slime in a very large herd comprising of at least 8 pawn slimes, 4 bishop or knight slimes, and 2 rook slimes, and they will always be accompanied by at least one chess queen slime.
The King Slimes will treat any outside agent as hostile and their attacks are perhaps the deadliest on all the slimes. They attack using the cross on their heads, which is made of an unknown, dense, and heavy material. In contrast to the chess queen slimes, chess king slimes prefer not to move much and only displace slowly in little hops. With the addition of their short-ranged attacks, it is very unlikely that they actually pose a threat to an observer unless they stray too close to one, in which case they’re screwed. Individually, even a bishop or knight slime is more troublesome than the king.

However, the chess king slime’s true power is their absolute authority over other chess slime subspecies. A chess king slime prefers going last, so they send the massive herd they’re leading to attack any alien agents first. This trait is the reason why chess king slimes are regarded as the true most dangerous of the chess slimes.

Although researchers rarely get a hand of king slimes, they noted about the chess king slimes’ incredibly heightened cognitive thinking compared to other slimes. Several research centers have reported attempts by the king slimes to execute a breakout plan with the other chess slimes.

Rancher Risks:

Unless maintained by a professional, it is absolutely discouraged by authorities to ranch a chess king slime. Although they are more mild mannered than rook or queen slimes and never go berserk, a chess king slime refuses to eat anything if there aren’t enough chess slimes of the same colors nearby which mimics the natural herd size. Even then, they only prefer to eat other chess slimes of the opposite color and their only favorites are the opposing chess slime kings, which are incredibly rare.

Chess king slimes are also very cunning. If they are corralled along with other chess slimes, they may stage a breakout plan. Every rancher who ever ranched a chess king slime reported cases where a king slime lead other slimes to escape their corrals overnight or when the rancher is away, each time through unseen means. That enough is troublesome, and that’s assuming that the rancher did not ranch other chess slimes of the opposite color…

A king slime will take months to years to trust a rancher. But when they do, they will assist the rancher by controlling the behavior of other chess slimes of the same color nearby, which provides a massive advantage when trying to farm the especially more troublesome subspecies of chess slimes.
It is always strongly recommended to ranch king slimes in free range.

Plortonomics:

As with other chess slimes, plorts of chess king slimes are rich in nutrient and can be used to make products that enhances a person’s body and mind. Chess king plort health products are also known to develop and maintain the brain function very effectively. Almost 100% of people who periodically consume these products have reported on an increased brain health and activity, halted brain-related diseases, and promote higher cognitive function for developing minds.

This whole thing is really interesting, but what do you feed them aside from other Chess plorts?

Also, can other slimes become Largos by eating a Chess plort, and if so, how does that affect the behavior?
