I wondered why the trees in the mossy blanket were sometimes sticky...

A light brown, melted slime, with a trail of the same colour as it's body.

Slimeology:
A Sap Slime's body isn't very strong, and so, they will leak the fluid from their body, leaving behind a sticky trail, in which will sometimes entrap ranchers, and other slimes.
Rancher Risks:
The only real risk, is the mucus it excretes slows down both slimes, and ranchers.
Plortonomics:
Sap Plorts are used as a very efficient adhesive, and also, a ingenious scientist in a country to the north refined these plorts, and used as a syrup for food.
