Iron/Rust Slime

Postby TrainCody » Thu Feb 23, 2017 7:50 pm

This is an idea I actually came up with a while ago that I've recently managed to refine.
Note: I'm not very confident in my ability to craft Slimepedia entries, so if you think you have some for this concept don't be afraid to share them. :)

Iron Slime

Diet: Water

Favorite: Puddle Plort

Default Plort Value: 45 NB

Rust Slime

Diet: Fruit

Favorite: Prune Stone

Default Plort Value: 20 NB

The concept is that both slimes are actually two sides of the same coin, capable of changing into each other: Rust Slimes will become Iron Slimes if kept in water long enough and Iron Slimes will become Rust Slimes if taken out of the water. The not insignificant Newbuck value is derived from the higher-than-normal effort needed to tend to these suckers. Of the two varieties, only Rust Slimes spawn in the wild, in batches of 2 or 3 in two isolated areas of their biome (preferably a ruinous jungle). While it is possible to find Iron Slimes here, the chances of it are very slim: due to their fruit based, preferably iron-rich diets, Rust Slimes are always moving and jumping around, and because it takes about 15 "minutes" for one to convert to an Iron Slime, they are more than likely to jump out before this happens when left to their own devices. They also have a habit of ricocheting off of other entities (especially when agitated) which makes it difficult to keep more than 6 of the slimes sequestered together in a single corral. The Iron Slimes are markedly less energetic than their counterparts, but can still be a pain to any Puddle Slimes they come across. Their having Puddle Plorts as a Favorite Food links into their Plort mechanic. Like Puddle Slimes, Iron Slimes produce Plorts every so often, only they take a long time doing so: a single Iron Slime will produce Plorts no more regularly than 1 every 30 "hours", however every Puddle Plort it consumes will knock 2 "hours" off of this timer.

I'm pretty sure I've seen these around, but I was unable to get any pictures, you can use the slimepedia entries I made for them though.

Iron Slime-
Appearance:
A dark grey slime, with orange eyes, and mouth.
Location:
Ruins
Diet:
Water
Slimeology:
Iron Slimes absorb water, as their bodies are fairly warm, this helps them to cool down, they are also fairly heavy, and because of this, they tend to sit still for long periods of time. Though, when they absorb too much water, they have been known to shift into a different state, known as a rust slime.
Rancher Risks:
Having a need for water to cool down, they will often flock towards water sources, this can spook some puddle slimes, since iron slimes love to eat puddle plorts, this can add stress to your puddle slimes, and cause them to stop producing plorts entirely.
Plortonomics:
Iron Plorts are often used for a way of collecting iron, without drilling into the ground.

Rust Slime -
Appearance:
A orange slime, with dark grey eyes, and mouth.
Location:
Ruins
Diet:
Fruit
Slimeology:
Rust Slimes are formed when iron slimes sit in water for too long, and will turn back when they dry for a bit, in this form, they are lighter than their iron counterparts, because of this, they are also very energetic, and enjoy jumping around.
Rancher Risks:
Their energetic nature can lead to a lot of problems, mostly in escaping their corrals, or pushing other slimes into trouble, since they come into existence in water, they can sometimes accidentally knock puddle slimes out of water.
Plortonomics:
Rust Plorts can be used to, suprisingly, prevent actual rust from forming on metals. It has also been known to be used as paint pigment.
Feel free to PM me with any slime requests, and I'll make you an image of them in the game.

Imma do some editing.

Iron Slime
Diet: Puddle plorts
Favourite: None
Location: Ruin Outskirts
Slimeology: Due to their 3-kilogram bodies, iron slimes often stop to sleep. While this is unbearably cute, you most certainly DO NOT want to be nearby one. They're quite rare in the wild - their bouncy orange half-cousins are far more common
Rancher Risks: While their cute sleepy flops may be adorable, you should probably stay away from these guys if they're a little drowsy - their enormous weight has been known to give unsuspecting victims a little more than a viral video. They've also been known to have sudden attacks of hunger - one managed to eat 3 days-worth of plorts in under 5 minutes!
Plortonomics: Using specialist machinery iron plorts can be converted into a tough metal called Plortum (Pm) that is extremely useful to make things like hammers or armour (or giant cat statues).

Rust Slime
Location: Ruin Outskirts
Diet: Fruit. LOTS of fruit.
Favourite: Prune Stone
Slimeology: Rust slimes are curious little things: though they weigh several kilograms, much like their cleaner counterparts, rust slimes still manage to be extremely energetic - in fact, they have been known to jump up to 10 metres into the air!
If left well fed with prune stones, they may transform into their sleepy cousins, the iron slime.
Rancher Risks: Their energetic nature can lead to a whole list of problems, from knocking each other out of coral air nets to accidentally knocking ranchers unconscious.
Plortonomics: Rust plorts can be used as a paint pigment, creating a beautiful orangey pink colour. It's rather sought over by artists due to this.

Okay, I have to give it to TheGreciansHousehold. Very humorous.

This would be awesome to see especially if you make largos with them. If these are added I cant wait for the chaos to ensue

I debated it for a while, but I ultimately wouldn't have it so you could make largos for these.

However, you hit the nail on the head: if you want to profit from these, you better be prepared for some headaches.

Side note: For added effect, I figured it would interesting if having just one Iron Slime will make all Puddles in the vicinity too nervous to produce, and that all other Slimes will react to any Rust Slimes in (close) proximity like they would the Tarr.

I'm now looking for suggestions on the methods/specifics on obtaining and harvesting Prune Stones. The end result should preferably be no less involved/complicated than those for the Odd Onion and Phase Lemon, while keeping with the lore given for the Prunes.
